Last Time

Hours Worked Total: 69.5

So I worked two more times, one on a saturday for  7 hours, and the other was my last day that I worked 6 hours. I worked at the opening of the Don Worth Exhibit, which was very fun. On the last day I spent it organizing books and magazines and when I left my mentors gave me a signed copy of a Mona Kuhn Book which I was super excited about because she's turned into my new favorite photographer. I had a great overall experience working at the gallery and I hope to maybe keep working there in the future.

Sorry I haven't written anything in a while (thanks to my graduation portfolio, it's hard to remember what's on my to-do list)

11am to 5:30pm (all three times)

Basically I have just been doing little chores and working with all the pictures set up around the gallery. I tagged all the pictures with who the photographer was and what the pictures was called. There were about 30 or so pictures that I had to tag. It got me memorizing photographer's names and what they are famous for. Like Mona was really interested in blurred out pictures of women. Then I got to add information to the client list and added in if anyone had bought any pictures lately, or just add in the new client with all their information. 

This last time, I went to run an errand and went 5 blocks down the street to get all the postcards for the new show we're having next week. I'll be working at the gallery for the official opening on May 9th. (all who read should attend)

Work, work, work...

Fairfax Photography Shop

Monday: 10 am - 5 pm

Today was a boring day. I set up to have 4 photo shoots done that day, and only 1 ended up coming in to get their picture taken. It was a fun for that one photo shoot with my friend, Irene. She took beautiful pictures, and some very silly ones too. I spent the rest of the day working on the pictures from the shoot to make them look their best. 

Oh! earlier that day I helped a women make a crazy frame for her pictures she had of her kid's birthday. The frame was a lava lamp print on all four sides and it looked really cool. I even surprised myself. I taught her how to use photoshop so she could work on the pictures herself, to lighten and darken the pictures to make them look prettier. 

It was just a very low-key day.

Scott Nichols Gallery

Wednesday: 11 am - 5:30 pm

So my mentor, Susan, was out all week so I got to work for Scott Nichols. They had just got back from a NY show so we were waiting on the 200 pictures they were shipping back. I spent the day looking up information about our next show on Don Worth. 

The main computer had crashed so I had to look up the information in books, which was pretty awesome because I got to see a lot of his pictures, that were amazing. I wrote down all the information on 7 sticky notes. The 200 pictures never came.

Thursday: 11 am - 4:30 pm

Yesterday while working on the Don Worth piece, the gallery got a phone call. The two hundred pictures from NY were here and ready to be unpacked. When the pictures got up to the 4th floor we immediately started taking everything out.

I unpacked all the pictures and leaned them against the wall, unwrapped the bubble wrapped ones, and took off the cardboard edges of all 200 pictures. It was really tiring but I got to see some great pictures that included Ansel Adams, Richard Avedon, and many others.

It takes two... WLE's

So because of some scheduling issues with my WLE (aka, the schools keeps switching it to monday and the gallery is CLOSED monday), I decided to add on a second WLE. I'm working where I did last year, Creative Portraiture, but under someone new. I was really glad to be back at work there, I missed working in the photography shop. Plus I had some good laughs being back there.

As soon as I got there, I started work on finding Stephanie a publisher for a book she wants to print. After an hour of working on that, a couple comes in and has a scheduled photo shoot. they get their pictures taken and I get to help with the fan and lights. When they're done and gone, I go out the get lunch, come back and help with another photo shoot.

This photo shoot was the first of it's kind that I've seen. This woman came in with her two sons, a goat, and two baby chickens. All to be photographed. The goat was really nervous and defecated all over the place, especially when getting his picture taken because of the giant flashing light. What was a little funny was that he seemed to stay really calm when I was holding onto him. So i got to hangout with him while he got his pictures taken. 

It's never a dull moment at Creative Portraiture.

11:00am - 3:30pm

As soon as I got to work in the morning, there was already a gallery emergency for me to help with. I only had enough time to put down my purse before I worked for half an hour to straiten out a photoshop problem. Eventually though, I was able to figure out what was wrong and fixed the problem. After praise, I finally was able to take off my jacket and start my main project, the library of books.

Anna visited the gallery and met my mentor and Mr. Nichols. I spent the rest of the day organizing books in the library, still on Ansel Adams. Around 3 in the afternoon, Susan, my mentor, told me she had to leave early to pick up her kids, and my computer for logging was being used so she let me go home early. 

The art of working in a gallery

11:00am - 5:30pm

Wednesday was my first day of working at my internship. I work at the 49 Geary Art Gallery, 4th floor at the Scott Nichols Gallery. It was a good first day working there. As soon as i got to the gallery, Susan, my mentor, explained exactly what she wanted me to do for the day, which turned out to be an all day task. 

She asked me to organize all the books the gallery had on to an online library so they could look up any book they had and be able to find it. I started in the 'A' section, starting with Ansel Adams. But they have a lot of books on Adams so I'm still working on organizing them.
